Natural resources such as rubber, timber, cocoa and palm oil can have a positive impact, but only if sourced and managed sustainably. Action is needed now to ensure the commodities industry has an equitable, sustainable future. And this is where Earthqualizer comes in.

We are a non-profit organization with international experience, rooted in the interests of local communities and dedicated to the sustainable management of natural resources.

Earthqualizer traces its roots back to 2006, and a chance meeting between two very different experts. Adri and Eric were both investigating oil palm in West Kalimantan, and discovered a shared interest in using satellite imagery to combat environmental destruction. They set up Aidenvironment Asia to hold international trade and investment accountable, by presenting brands and banks with evidence of their impact on the ground. With a combination of Adri’s knowledge of local actors and Eric’s international perspective, their collaboration helped to stop deforestation and land grabs.

Why is it important?

We strongly believe in the collaborative potential of the private sector, communities and (local and regional) government. We therefore design and implement programs based around a co-management approach, to deliver greater social, economic, and environmental values within a landscape.

In practice, this collaboration is channeled into three major areas where we can make a difference to environmental and social conditions:

Corporate Landscape Responsibility

Success stories

The duo developed a reputation as deeply engaged about corporate accountability. They played important roles in the founding of Chain Reaction Research and the development of RSPO and its Grievance Procedure. Then, after a decade of growing the Aidenvironment Asia organization, the time had come to establish a domestic branch for environmental and social justice in Indonesia. And so Earthqualizer was born.

  • We empower people through advocacy and legal support, while also helping companies transform their supply chains and practices for the benefit of people and nature.
  • We support governments to create policy; communities to make their voices heard; and companies to implement sustainability commitments. All actions are ultimately geared towards the protection of forests and community rights.
  • We transform agricultural industries to achieve environmental protection and socio-economic justice.
  • We make it possible to reimagine a world where commodities are grown equitably and sustainably. Gathered and analyzed by our experienced local team, our GIS data helps drive decisions that can result in credible, more responsible management practices.

Recovery

Landscape recovery is an essential part of the work we do. Wherever NDPE non-compliance occurs, we take action to reduce harm and restore balance. Diversifying landscapes is key to environmental resilience, while handing management of natural resources back to local people can also open doors to social justice.

Together with our partners, we propose the following four approaches to recovery:

Tools

Recovery plans are comprised of three complementary tools:

Brands Growers Traders/refiners Communities Government NGO Finance Institution
Implementation of recovery plan in partnership with stakeholders
Investment in finance, technology and marketing, locally and internationally
Implementation of NDPE reflected at plantation
Catalysation collaborating between stakeholders
Provide push for government to regulate sustainability aspectes in the palm oil sector

client Testimonials
Richard Russels
Earth & Mars Inc

“Since we started working with Earthqualizer and its partners, we have dramatically improved our understanding of Mars’ own supply chain. Not only did we get to know the companies and people behind our suppliers, we also learned that it is not enough to just ditch non-compliant suppliers if we want to contribute to sustainability on the ground. Continued supplier engagement is essential.“
