On 26 September 2024, Earthqualizer Foundation hosted a dynamic virtual event focused on the critical role of landscape recovery and social forestry in tackling climate change. With the support of key partners, the event demonstrated how community-based initiatives can drive meaningful climate mitigation while empowering local communities.
Key Highlights:
Indonesia’s Role in the Global Climate Crisis: The event began with a keynote address that outlined the significant impact of global trade on Indonesia’s ecosystems and carbon emissions. Despite previous efforts falling short, Indonesia’s vast carbon sink offers immense potential for climate restoration, making it a key area for investment in deforestation avoidance and landscape recovery.
Community-Based Climate Action: Earthqualizer’s Recovery and Landscape team shared insights into the effectiveness of social forestry programs in Indonesia. By legalizing communal lands and supporting local forest management, these programs not only reduce emissions but also drive local economic development. The team emphasized that these low-barrier initiatives are accessible, government-supported, and deliver tangible results that align with corporate climate targets.
Unilever’s Commitment to Deforestation-Free Supply Chains: Unilever presented their ongoing efforts to go beyond deforestation avoidance, focusing on recovery and rehabilitation through social forestry. Their program exemplifies how large corporations can work with local communities to restore damaged ecosystems while supporting smaller suppliers and advancing global sustainability goals.
Local Success Stories: A powerful success story from the ground showcased how a partnership between local communities and corporations led to the recovery of degraded land, the protection of forests, and the revitalization of local economies. The implementation of co-management agreements and timebound action plans proved critical to the project’s success.
Accelerating Shared Responsibility for Climate Action: The final session explored the role of corporate demand in mainstreaming climate-resilient practices. Earthqualizer highlighted how companies can invest in social forestry as a cost-effective, scalable solution to meet climate goals and uplift local communities, making these programs a win-win for both the environment and businesses.
The event concluded with a lively Q&A session where participants discussed the future of social forestry, measurement of impact, and how corporations can actively contribute to global climate targets through shared responsibility.
Today, Earthqualizer is at the forefront of transforming global supply chains. Its mission is clear: to balance the needs of nature with the demands of industry, ensuring that economic growth does not come at the cost of our planet’s health. Through innovative initiatives like the No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation (NDPE) policy, they have helped reshape the landscape of sustainable agriculture, ensuring that companies are accountable not just for their own operations but for their entire supply chain.
Thank you to all our speakers, participants, and partners for their contributions. We look forward to continuing the conversation and working together to drive impactful climate action. For more details, stay connected with Earthqualizer Foundation and explore ways to get involved.
